What Ice Rescue Has To Do With Money

Practice. I was met with this spectacle on my drive into town. Mesmerized, I pulled off into the parking lot and watched as these brave (crazy?) men and women practiced what they do. Practice is the key to being successful at any task or skill set. When we practice regularly, we become highly competent and able to do the job when things get tough. These people rescue others from the cold waters of lakes and rivers. Working as a team, they need to know what to do to stay safe, and to keep safe the person in need, in a really challenging environment. They are highly effective in an emergency situation because they have practiced and practiced, building knowledge, skills and resources.. I sat there watching, and it made me think of how many people could benefit from practicing their money. So many deal with money in a ignore-panic cycle. You ignore your money until there is a crisis and then deal with whatever comes up in a panic, and then go right back to ignoring it. What would happen if these rescuers did that? Imagine – they are called up when there is an emergency, and they try to figure out what to do while the pressure is on. How competent do you think they would be? How confident would they be? How effective would they be? That is the exact opposite of what I saw on the ice. What if, instead of ignoring your money, you practiced working on your money regularly, when there isn’t a crisis? You would learn the skills and resources that would make...
Stand up and play your game full out

Stand up and play your game full out

“You must be a role model for your children, the children. You are paving the way for the next generation.” Arlene Dickinson I was thrilled to attend the Mompreneurs Annual Conference this past weekend.  Arlene Dickinson was the keynote speaker and I was so impressed by her story and her message.  As a Dragon on the hit TV show Dragon’s Den, Arlene could have spent her time touting her successes, and instead she shared her challenges – in being part of an immigrant family, a single mom and a struggling business owner. “Stop building your business on blind passion. Stand up and play your game full out.” Arlene’s subtle yet powerful messages ring true and are a powerful call out to all of us. Have a fantastic...

The occasional wasp or spider

Life is full here in Central Ontario.  It is some of the most wonderful weather of the year. We just got back from my sister’s cottage and the glory of the Canadian Shield – beautiful clean lakes, crisp mornings full of birdsong, kids laughing and fighting, and the occasional wasp at the breakfast table or spider in the bathroom.  As with anything, there are a number of responses that can be made in any given situation. One of the great things I learned as a kid is that we can choose our response.  If you are running into life events that aren’t serving you, consider changing your response.  Read this week’s article for the inside scoop. Have a fantastic...
