It always comes as a surprise to me that the road to success is so convoluted. Even after many years of working towards and reaching many of my success milestones, I am still amazed by the twists and turns that are part of the journey to what I really want. I seem to forget that it is always like this.
My clients Carol and John called this week to talk about their journey. They have had some setbacks, some changes and some opportunities, and they are wondering what their next steps are.
They too forgot that the pathway to success in their money life is not going to be a straight line. I reminded them that they will need to make detours, they will lose the trail for a while and they will often take 2 steps forward and one step back.
So, how do you manage the exciting yet sometimes rough and bumpy journey?
Be Clear About Where You Want to End Up
Imagine negotiating those twists and turns if you are not crystal clear on the destination. You would get lost in the wilderness and go around and around. Have a clear goal for business revenue, personal income, savings and/or debt repayment. Know what the milestones are and when you have arrived. When you know where you want to end up, and keep your eye on the goal, the detours along the way are not as challenging.
Map Out Your Route and Keep Your Eyes Open
When you map out your route, you have a plan to get to where you want to go. When life detours you, you know where you need to get back onto the plan. Watching where you are going allows you to course correct, take a different path, make a different decision. Know the information about your journey. Know your numbers and your status towards your goal.
Ask For Directions
When you get lost in a detour, you’ve lost your place on the map or the path has circled back around, stop and ask for directions. Get help when you need it and ask for someone to join your journey for a few kilometers.
Lead on! Take charge of your journey. Follow the winding road and enjoy the scenery along the way. Remember that it is not the destination that matters but the journey itself.
